Power…

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Power corrupts.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Therefore SQL must be the pure stuff of evil.

While doing a little maintenance on this site, I discovered we had ~6000 fake account registrations (as “Subscribers”. They never got as far as having their own blogs). These dated back to 2008. There’s must have been some vulnerability back then that got scripted.

Anyway, one simple SQL query and…

Thanks for coming.

Some kind of award?

Just want to put my hands together for Pimaster for single-handedly quadrupling the traffic to the Byteclub blog in one day with his NBN and Net Filter blog post. Nice work :)

Themes and Tracking

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

I just added Google Analytics tracking to all the available themes on this site. It’s been enlightening to see how much traffic our defunct wiki gets everyday. I emailed John to see if the of Tyler db might be salvageable, but no reply at this point.

The traffic has settled down so I’ve added it to al the blogs and we should see some interesting results in the next week or so regarding traffic to our individual blogs.

While adding the tracking code, I realised that some of the themes I’d previously uploaded contained obfuscated code. WFT? Obfuscate a WordPress theme? I don’t think so. Who is so precious about their code that they would obfuscate PHP? And for an Open Source platform in the first place? So I have uninstalled those three themes. Nobody was using them anyway so there is zero impact from this.

For what it’s worth, For your blogging goodness, I added a couple of new themes. They are AtahualpaArjuna X, and Motion.

Enjoy.

Tracking

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

I have added Google Analytics tracking to the main ByteClub home page (http://byteclub.net), but stopped short of adding it to everyone’s accounts.

Would anyone mind if I did this? I’d happily set up sub account for specific blogs and share that data with the blogs owner.

Thoughts?

Forum, again

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

I know I’ve said this before, but the last time I installed bbpress, I struggled to get the single sign-on integrated between bbpress and wpmu working.

Well, both systems have matured since then (bbpress actually made it to 1.0!), and now the integration seems to be working.

So feel free to check out, and even post to, the new byteclub.net/forum . Currently only byteclub members can post to the forum, but wouldn’t that make a great topic to discuss. How about an “ask ByteClub” forum that anyone could post to?

BTW, I shall redirect the old forum.byteclub.net subdomain to the new sub-folder address. I suspect a subdomain my mess with the cookies used to aid integration.

More upgrades

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Hi all. Just upgraded wordpress. Seems to have gone okay except that everyone seems to now be using the same theme. Did that just happen with the upgrade, or were we really all using the same theme?

upgrade done

All seems to have gone well. I’ve been seeing some stories about WordPress security issues recently. Hope nobody has been experiencing any problems.

About to attempt upgrades. Crossing fingers now.

Currently backing up ByteClub so I can upgrade WPMU and install capture. Hope there is not too much interruption.

Forum

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

I have installed BBpress as a forum for ByteClub.

Have a look at forum.byteclub.net

BBpress shares the same user table with wordpress, so your WP login will work on the forum too. There is suposed to be an option to share cookies between the two apps so it acts as a single sign on system (Currently you have to log in to both serperatly. Meh), but I haven’t got that working yet.
